21,000 Out Of 60,000 Kano Civil Servants Indebted To Private Loan Vendors

Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Umar Ibrahim Faruq has expressed concern over the number of civil servants indebted to private firm loan vendors.

According to the SSG, government disburses over N19 billion monthly to service loans indebted by 21,000 workers predominantly teachers in public schools out of 60,000 workers.

The SSG lamented the negative implication of the heavy loans to general productive, the SSG cited situation where a teacher who earn N132,000 monthly ended up receiving N500 at the end of the month due to loan indemnity.

He affirmed the level of rut in the state and local government payroll as clear element of corruption, added that government will go extra miles to service maximum disciplinary action on any one culpable.

Meanwhile, the government has discovered fresh rot in its civil service with 240 workers drawing doubt salaries from the state payroll.

Prior to the recent revelation, government had disclosed 247 ghost workers on the state local government payroll who are either retired or dead.

Briefing journalists on the ongoing verification and validation exercise of the state payroll system, Chairman of the state payroll, Dr. Auwal Sanda revealed that 217 staff uncovered using same bank verification number on payroll.

Besides, Dr. Sanda further disclosed 1,335 workers whose names appeared on the payroll have refused to report for verification.

He reminded that while the committee was not in hurry to declare them as ghost workers, the affected persons would still be given the opportunity to appear for the bio-data capturing and verification to clear their names.

Revealing similar attrocity at the local government level, Chairman of the payroll verification committee, Alh. Umaru Idi stressed that 679 staff whose names appear on the payroll have failed to appear for bio-data verification.
