Inmates of Composite Custodial Facility in Kano have appealed to the Kano State Government to provide classrooms and other educational facilities for prisoners in the state.
The inmates made the call when the Chairperson of Kano State Committee on Prerogative of Mercy, Hajiya Azumi Namadi-Bebeji, took a tour to the three composite custodial centres in the state.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Correctional Service Centre, Kano State Command, SC Musbahu Kofar-Nassarawa on Friday in Kano.
Kofar-Nassarawa said: “During the chairperson’s interaction with the inmates, they complaint lack of educational programmes for them as found in other custodial centres in the state.

“The State Government should intervene and assist the Nigerian Correctional Service in this direction” he said.
The inmates commended the state government for paying NECO Senior School Certificate Examination as well as NBIS in 2023 for 38 inmates, adding that inmates in the rural Composite Custodial Centres should also enjoy from this initiative.

According to him, the inmates also requested for vocational workshops and equipment to enable those who have no aptitude for formal education to learn skills and trades.
The inmates called for speedy dispensation of pending cases, adding that it would address overcrowding in the facilities.
Responding, Hajiya Namadi-Bebeji reiterated the state government commitment towards improving the welfare of inmates in the state.
“Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf’s administration would continue to provide succour to the less privilege through empowering the youths to be self-reliant,” Namadi-Bebeji said
She urged the inmates to be law-abiding citizens before and after discharge from lawful custody.
On his part, the Controller of Corrections Kano State Command, Mr Suleiman Inuwa, commended the Chairperson for her zeal determination and total commitment to humanity more especially to the inmates in the state.
