In recent weeks, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been in the spotlight for two very different but telling reasons. One took him into the world of academia, where he joined scholars and policymakers to celebrate leadership and continuity at Bayero University, Kano. The other drew him back into the heart of his personal philanthropy, where his Foundation oversaw the conversion of 280 new adherents to Islam in Kano.

At the Amani Event Centre in Kano, the send-off ceremony for outgoing Bayero University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, doubled as a welcome for the institution’s 12th Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa. Organized by Prof. Hafsat Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the event was tagged “Grand Academic Salute: Celebrating Academic Excellence, Transformative Leadership and Legacies of Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, and Ushering in the 12th Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa.”

Dr. Ganduje, himself a long-time advocate of continuity in governance, used the occasion to emphasize the dangers of abandoning projects and policies midway. “Cancelling or abandoning existing projects and programmes weakens governance and slows progress,” he warned. His remarks were received warmly, especially as they echoed his political legacy as both a former governor and party leader. He and his wife, Prof. Hafsat Ganduje, were later honoured for their contributions to education and to the growth of Bayero University.

Barely days later, the Ganduje Foundation, an organization he has nurtured for decades, brought another dimension of his public persona to the fore. At Muhammad Gauyama Hall, within his Kano residence, Ganduje hosted Islamic clerics and community leaders for a prayer session seeking divine guidance for Nigeria’s peace, its leaders, and its security agencies. The highlight of the gathering was the announcement that 280 individuals — 202 women and 78 men — had embraced Islam through the Foundation’s outreach.

“These people were identified through our Da’awah team, who discovered that many rural farmers already shared our language and way of life but had not yet embraced Islam. Today, many of them have joined the faith, and we pray Allah keeps them firm,” Ganduje said. Each convert received a bag of fertilizer, clothing materials, a financial token, and Islamic books, alongside promises of continued guidance from the Foundation’s preachers.

The involvement of his children, including Dr. Asiya Ganduje of the North West Development Commission and Dr. Amina Ganduje, underscored how deeply the initiative has become a family tradition. Both praised their father’s blend of faith and development work, noting that his philanthropy also extends to mosque construction, medical outreaches, and water supply projects across rural Kano.

Together, the two events — one academic, the other religious — portray Ganduje as a man working across spheres of influence. For his admirers, he is a political leader whose legacy extends beyond the corridors of government into education, religion, and social welfare. For his critics, the blending of faith, politics, and philanthropy raises questions about influence and reach. Yet, what is undeniable is that his presence continues to shape conversations both in Kano and beyond.

Whether in the academic halls of Bayero University or the prayer gatherings at his residence, Ganduje’s message appears consistent: continuity, community, and contribution remain the cornerstones of his life’s work.
