Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran, according to reports from state media.
The 56-year-old cleric was confirmed as his father’s successor on Sunday following a vote by the Assembly of Experts, the powerful body of clerics tasked with selecting the country’s highest political and religious authority.
His appointment comes days after the death of Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed last Saturday during coordinated military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel.
