The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, has commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his commitment to renovating and upgrading healthcare facilities across the state at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
Dr. Labaran made this commendation in an exclusive interview with the head of the Public Relations Unit of the ministry, Ibrahim Abdullahi, which was made available to media outlets.
According to a statement by the ministry’s Information Officer, Ibrahim Abdullahi, Dr. Labaran highlighted that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had pledged significant improvements in the healthcare sector during his election campaign. These promises included the establishment of general hospitals in local government areas (LGAs) that previously lacked one, as well as ensuring the presence of a functional primary healthcare facility in every political ward across the 44 LGAs in Kano State.

As part of efforts to fulfill these commitments, the commissioner noted that some health facilities are currently being upgraded to general hospitals to enhance healthcare accessibility for residents. He emphasized that it is unacceptable for patients to travel over 100 kilometers from remote LGAs just to receive medical care. The government, he stated, aims to equip every LGA with a fully functional general hospital staffed with qualified medical professionals capable of handling various ailments.
Dr. Labaran further urged citizens to support the government’s initiatives in repositioning the state’s health sector. He called for community ownership of the projects by ensuring that hospital structures are protected from vandalism and that medical equipment is safeguarded from theft.
Additionally, the commissioner advised the public to understand that doctors and other health workers are professionals who, like everyone else, can make mistakes while adhering to standard procedures. He urged citizens to allow healthcare personnel to perform their duties in accordance with established professional guidelines.
On the other hand, Dr. Labaran cautioned health workers against harassing or mistreating patients seeking medical attention. He stressed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration would not tolerate any form of inhumane treatment toward patients in healthcare facilities.
