The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Monday June 8, 2026 performed a mini durbar in honour of the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, and his delegation during a visit to Kano Emirate. It could be recalled that in 2024 UNESCO inscribed Kano Durbar on the Representative List of Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This is because Kano Durbar is the largest procession of colorful horses in the world. It is the tradition of the Emirate to perform Durbar for important dignitaries.
The colourful event, held at the Emir’s palace in Kano, showcased the rich cultural heritage of the ancient emirate and underscored the long-standing importance of Kano as a centre of commerce and civilisation in West Africa.
Speaking during the visit, Emir Sanusi called on the European Union to deepen its support for Kano State and Nigeria in critical sectors such as security, healthcare and education, with particular emphasis on the education of the girl-child.
The monarch noted that Kano has historically played a significant role in regional trade and cultural preservation, tracing its prominence to the era of trans-Saharan commerce.
According to him, improved support for security initiatives would help bring lasting peace and stability to communities affected by insecurity.
The Emir also highlighted the importance of investing in healthcare and education, describing them as essential pillars for sustainable development and social progress.
Earlier, Ambassador Mignot said the European Union delegation was in Kano as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation with Northern Nigeria in key areas of development.
He said the EU remained committed to supporting programmes aimed at improving education, healthcare delivery and security across the region.
The ambassador commended Kano’s rich cultural heritage and expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to him and members of his delegation.
The mini durbar, which featured horse riders, traditional regalia and other cultural displays, attracted palace officials, community leaders and other dignitaries who gathered to welcome the visiting delegation.
The event formed part of activities marking the ambassador’s visit to Kano and provided an opportunity for discussions on areas of mutual interest between the European Union and stakeholders in the state.
