In a notable departure from tradition, the Federal Government has officially cancelled the annual military parade for this year’s Democracy Day celebration, scheduled for Thursday, June 12, 2025.
The announcement was made by the Inter-Ministerial Committee coordinating the Democracy Day programme, confirming that the parade typically a central feature of the national celebration will not hold this year.
Instead, the 2025 commemoration will begin with a national broadcast by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at 7 a.m. In his address, the President is expected to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, examine the current state of the nation, and highlight ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting good governance.

By noon, President Tinubu will appear before a special joint session of the National Assembly. The session will focus on Nigeria’s democratic evolution, national unity, and ongoing efforts to reposition key sectors for more effective governance.
Later in the day, a public lecture will be held at 4 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. Themed “Strengthening Democracy Through Lasting Reforms,” the event will feature prominent political leaders, policymakers, and civil society actors reflecting on the nation’s democratic progress and persistent challenges.
While no official reason was provided for the parade’s cancellation, a source within the presidency hinted it might be related to an incident during last year’s celebration, when President Tinubu briefly slipped while attempting to mount a ceremonial vehicle at Eagle Square, Abuja. The moment drew significant public attention, though the President quickly regained composure and continued with the event.
Despite ongoing speculation, government officials have reiterated that President Tinubu remains in good health and fully committed to advancing the nation’s democratic aspirations.
