Nigeria’s National Power Grid has suffered another collapse, plunging several parts of the country into darkness and interrupting electricity supply to millions of homes and businesses.
Findings showed that power generation fell dramatically from more than 4,500 megawatts to just 24 megawatts by 1:30 pm.
The disruption reportedly affected all 23 power generation plants linked to the national grid, leading to zero electricity allocation for the country’s 11 electricity distribution companies.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the system failure had not been confirmed, while officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria were yet to release a detailed explanation.
This incident marks the first grid collapse recorded in 2026. It comes only weeks after a similar nationwide outage on December 29, 2025.
Recall that repeated grid failures in recent years have been blamed on technical faults, poor maintenance of transmission infrastructure, and fluctuations in power generation capacity.
Industry stakeholders have continued to urge the government and power sector operators to adopt stronger contingency plans to curb the recurring system breakdowns.
Pending an official response from authorities, the latest collapse has once again raised concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and its capacity to meet the country’s growing demand for reliable power.
