The Kano State Government has raised concerns over the increasing activities of commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Achaba, across the state, vowing decisive measures to safeguard residents’ lives and property.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Peoples Pen24 recalled that the activities of commercial motorcyclists was banned by the Kano State Government on January 24th, 2013.
The then Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, announced the ban in a broadcast in Kano, saying the measure became imperative considering a series of attacks in the state.Kano city guide
The ban came in shortly after the attack on the convoy of the Emir of Kano, late Alhaji Ado Bayero.
Also, the ban was reintroduced in September 2017 and June 2020 as part of measures against insecurity in the state.
Waiya stated that intelligence reports confirmed the resurgence of Achaba operations in several areas of Kano metropolis, as well as in surrounding and border communities.
“Despite the longstanding ban, some individuals are now operating motorcycles as commercial operators in parts of the state, creating security challenges that cannot be ignored,” he said.
Waiya said the government is working closely with security agencies to contain the threat, adding that the state has provided all necessary support to ensure their operations are effective and professional.
“Our security agencies are fully on top of the situation. We remain committed to deploying any additional assistance required to protect the lives and property of Kano residents,” he emphasized.Kano city guide
The commissioner also addressed public recommendations on enhanced monitoring, including surveillance at the state’s entry and exit points.
He said these suggestions are being reviewed as part of a comprehensive security assessment and response strategy.
“We sincerely appreciate the vigilance, cooperation, and patriotism of the people of Kano. Their input strengthens our efforts to overcome security challenges,” Waiya added.
He reiterated that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration remains committed to restoring peace and stability across all 44 Local Government Areas.
According to Waiya, the government will continue collaborating with local authorities, traditional institutions, community leaders, and citizens’ groups to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
Residents have been urged to remain alert, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with security operatives as the government intensifies efforts to curb the return of Achaba operations.
