The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development has commenced the 2026 annual Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) vaccination exercise, targeting approximately 1.5 million heads of cattle across the state.
The state wide campaign was officially launched in Bunkure Local Government Area.
The campaign was inaugurated under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, and represented at the event by Dr. Abubakar from the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology.
Speaking at the flag off ceremony, Dr. Abubakar disclosed that the vaccination exercise will cover all 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State as part of a comprehensive strategy to control and eliminate the disease.
Delivering the Commissioner’s message, Dr. Abubakar stated that the Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development was established by the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, with the aim of improving animal health, strengthening livestock production, and safeguarding public health across the state.
Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu emphasized that CBPP is a highly contagious and debilitating disease that severely affects cattle productivity, leading to weight loss, reduced milk production, poor meat quality, and, in severe cases, death.
These effects pose serious economic threats to livestock farmers and may indirectly affect food security and public health.
The Commissioner therefore called on livestock farmers, herders, and all stakeholders to fully cooperate with veterinary officials by presenting their animals for vaccination. He stressed that collective action is critical to successfully curbing the spread of the disease.
Dr. Abubakar further noted that preventing CBPP through vaccination will help ensure the availability of healthy and quality livestock products, especially as the holy month of Ramadan approaches, when demand for safe and wholesome meat increases.
The Honourable Commissioner expressed his sincere appreciation to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his continued support to the Ministry of Livestock Development and for providing the enabling environment for the successful implementation of livestock development programmes across the state.
In conclusion, the Honourable Commissioner reiterated his appreciation to His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for providing the necessary support and enabling environment for the Ministry to effectively carry out its mandate and protect the livestock sector in Kano State.
