As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) has issued an urgent appeal to all road users, particularly drivers, to exercise patience and caution while driving. Ramadan, a time of worship and reflection, often brings changes in driving behavior due to fatigue, dehydration, and increased traffic congestion, especially during Iftar and Taraweeh prayers.
In a statement, KAROTA highlighted the need for road users to adhere to safety guidelines during this period to prevent accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow. The agency provided the following safety tips for drivers:
- Avoid Over-Speeding Before Iftar: Many drivers rush home for Iftar, causing congestion and accidents. Drive at a safe speed to protect yourself and others.
- Stay Alert and Calm: Fasting can lead to fatigue or dizziness. If you feel weak or drowsy, take a break before continuing your journey.
- Exercise Patience and Courtesy: Traffic congestion increases, especially around markets and mosques. Avoid reckless driving and show understanding toward others.
- Stay Hydrated and Eat Light Before Driving: Drink enough water and eat a light meal at Suhoor to maintain focus and energy.
- Watch Out for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Many people walk to mosques, particularly at night. Drive carefully, especially in crowded areas.
- Plan Your Journeys in Advance: If possible, avoid traveling during peak hours and ensure you are in good condition before driving.
- Follow Traffic Rules and KAROTA Officials’ Instructions: Adhere to speed limits and regulations to safeguard lives.

KAROTA reaffirmed its commitment to road safety during Ramadan and announced plans to increase patrols to facilitate smooth traffic movement. The agency urged all drivers to practice patience, respect fellow road users, and drive responsibly throughout the holy month.
The statement, signed by KAROTA spokesperson Nabulusi Abubakar Kofar Na’isa, conveyed the best wishes of the agency’s Managing Director, Faisal Mahmud Kabir, for a peaceful and safe Ramadan observance.
