The Federal Government of Nigeria has asserted that Kaduna-based controversial cleric, Shaikh Ahmad Gumi, is subject to the laws of the land, emphasizing that no individual, regardless of status, is exempt from legal scrutiny. This declaration was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, during a press briefing at the State House on Monday.

Addressing reporters, Minister Idris affirmed the government’s firm stance on Shaikh Ahmad Gumi, revealing that the cleric had been summoned for questioning concerning his remarks amidst the surge of kidnappings in the North.

Social media reports had circulated comments attributed to Gumi, including his criticism of a recently released list implicating individuals in funding terrorist activities, among them his media aide, Tukur Mamu, who remains in detention with the Department of State Services (DSS).

Gumi, in his remarks, contended that terrorists finance their operations through ransom payments acquired from kidnapping innocent citizens. He offered to mediate between the terrorists and the Nigerian government, urging authorities to address the root causes of the crisis for a peaceful resolution.

The minister highlighted concerns raised by Nigerians regarding Gumi’s potential role in the abductions, underscoring the necessity of his interrogation.

Minister Idris reiterated that Gumi’s offer to negotiate with terrorists warranted scrutiny, emphasizing the government’s commitment to obtaining relevant information to address security challenges.

“Government will stop at nothing to obtain any necessary information to resolve our issues; the security agencies are vigilant and proactive,” declared Minister Idris during the briefing, affirming that Shaikh Ahmad Gumi, like all citizens, is accountable for his actions and statement under the law.
