One Killed, Many Injured As Explosion Rocks Niger

 

An early morning explosion in Sabon-Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, has left one person dead and six others injured.

The incident, confirmed by the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, occurred on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

According to Abiodun, the blast, which happened around 7:30 a.m., was caused by dynamites stored in the area by a suspect for mining activities.

The explosion resulted in significant destruction, affecting 12 houses in the community.

“The victim, Fatima Sadauki, sadly lost her life, while six injured individuals were taken to the General Hospital, Kainji, for treatment,” Abiodun said.

He further disclosed that the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Danmamman, has initiated an investigation into the incident. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit has been deployed to assess the site.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect responsible for storing the dynamites is currently on the run. Meanwhile, normalcy has been restored in the area, with ongoing surveillance to prevent further occurrences.
