More than 100 inmates facing the death penalty in Kano State have appealed to the state government and the Committee of Prerogative of Mercy for clemency.
In a press release issued by Musbahu Lawan Kofar Mata, the Public Relations Officer of the Correctional Center in Kano, it was revealed that the Controller of Correctional Centers, Suleiman M. Inuwa, has submitted a list of inmates seeking clemency to the Committee.
The Controller presented the list during the Committee’s visit to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguzu, Kano, handing it over to the Chairperson of the Kano State Prerogative of Mercy Committee, Hajiya Azumi Namadi Bebeji.

The list includes inmates on death row, those serving life sentences, individuals with lengthy sentences, as well as those with significant medical challenges and elderly inmates.
Assuring the inmates, the Chairperson pledged that the government would review their cases based on their conduct and industry while incarcerated, as attested by the Correctional Service.
Bebeji expressed admiration for inmates who had memorized the Holy Quran and commended the academic achievements of some who obtained impressive scores in exams like the National Examination Council (NECO) and (NBIS), with aspirations for admission into the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
Encouraging all inmates to adhere to the rules of the Custodial Centre and contribute positively to society, Bebeji emphasized the importance of productivity.
The Controller thanked the Chairperson for spearheading the Iftar feeding program in the facility and acknowledged the positive impact on decongesting Custodial Centres. He noted that while some inmates have exhausted their appeals, others are seeking clemency.
Assuring the Controller, Namadi affirmed her commitment to presenting the cases to the Executive Governor of Kano State for further consideration.
