The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Khadija Ali for allegedly abandoning her one-day-old baby along a bush path near Crush Rock, behind the uncompleted Red Bricks Market in Mpape, Abuja.

The arrest was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh.

According to the statement, officers from the Mpape Division acted swiftly following a distress call from residents who reported the discovery of the abandoned newborn in the area.

“Upon receiving the distress call, the neonate was immediately rescued and taken to the Mpape Primary Health Care Center, where medical evaluation confirmed that the baby is in stable condition,” SP Adeh stated.

During interrogation, the mother reportedly admitted to abandoning the baby, citing financial hardship and her husband’s abandonment as reasons for her actions.

SP Adeh further noted, “The rescued baby will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while the mother will face prosecution according to the provisions of sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 upon the conclusion of investigations.”
