WAEC Releases Result of First Computer-Based Exam for Private Candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has unveiled the outcomes of the inaugural Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2024–First Series.

Transitioning from conventional paper-based tests, the council conducted this landmark examination utilizing a hybrid approach, as disclosed in a statement released to journalists on Friday.

The statement elucidated that the novel CB-WASSCE involved projecting all questions on computer screens, with candidates providing real-time responses to multiple-choice questions electronically.

Meanwhile, answers to essay and practical test questions were recorded in booklets provided to examinees.

The examination spanned from Wednesday, January 31 to Saturday, February 17, 2024.

Analysis of candidates’ performance revealed that out of the 8,139 participants, 3,424 individuals achieved credit and above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics, representing 42.07%.

Additionally, 2,519 candidates, constituting 30.95%, attained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including both English Language and Mathematics.

The coordination of examiners and marking of scripts occurred at three designated venues in Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna from March 1 to 16, 2024, involving a total of 459 examiners.

Despite a slight decrease in candidature by 4.30% compared to 2023, with 8,362 candidates registered, 8,139 individuals sat for the exam across 140 Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers nationwide.

Notably, the examination accommodated 21 candidates with various Special Needs, including visual impairment, impaired hearing, and albinism.

WAEC ensured comprehensive support for these candidates throughout the examination process, underscoring its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in education.
