The newly appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police, Garba Ahmed, officially assumed duty today, Wednesday, as the head of Zone I Command of the Nigeria Police Force, which covers Kano and Jigawa States.
Speaking at the command headquarters shortly after taking over, AIG Garba Ahmed pledged to prioritize the safety and security of lives and property across the zone. He assured the public of his firm commitment to combating crime and restoring public confidence in the police.
“I will work tirelessly to address the security challenges, including the lingering issues of Daba (street gangsterism) and rampant phone snatching incidents, especially in Kano metropolis and its environs. Our strategy will involve proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and enhanced patrol visibility in crime-prone areas,” he said.
Garba Ahmed, a seasoned police officer from Katsina State, brings with him over three decades of experience in law enforcement. His deployment to Zone I follows the retirement of his predecessor, AIG Ahmed Ammani, who bowed out of service three weeks ago after a meritorious career.

The new police boss emphasized the importance of community policing as a cornerstone of his administration, calling on residents of Kano and Jigawa States to collaborate with law enforcement by volunteering useful information that could aid in crime prevention and detection.
“We cannot succeed without the support and cooperation of the communities we serve. I urge the public to work closely with us by reporting suspicious activities and helping us identify criminal elements hiding among the people,” AIG Ahmed appealed.
Addressing the security situation in Jigawa State, he expressed determination to reduce the frequent clashes between farmers and herders. He said the Police will engage traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to promote peaceful coexistence and prevent future conflicts.
“With my vast experience in managing security operations across the country, I am confident that incidents of farmer-herder clashes in Jigawa will be drastically reduced. We intend to adopt a dialogue-based approach while also enforcing the law where necessary,” he stated.
AIG Garba Ahmed’s assumption of office has been welcomed by key stakeholders in both Kano and Jigawa, with high expectations that his leadership will usher in a new era of security, peace, and stability in the zone.
