The Federal Government has announced Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day.

The declaration was conveyed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement released on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

According to the minister, June 12 occupies a special place in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolising the sacrifices, resilience and determination of citizens who struggled for the establishment and sustenance of democratic rule.

“June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country. Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to democratic ideals, stressing that the administration remains focused on promoting transparency, accountability, the rule of law and inclusive governance.

He stated that efforts to strengthen democratic institutions would continue in line with constitutional provisions and the government’s responsibility to protect the nation’s democratic framework.

The minister also disclosed that the Ministry of Interior, working alongside relevant security agencies, would sustain measures aimed at improving internal security and ensuring the protection of lives and property nationwide.

He emphasised that peace and security remain essential ingredients for democratic stability and national progress.

As part of the Democracy Day observance, Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to reflect on their civic duties and renew their commitment to national unity and respect for the law.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.

He further urged citizens to take stock of the nation’s democratic evolution and support initiatives designed to deepen democratic culture and strengthen national cohesion.

Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 in recognition of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which is widely acknowledged as the freest and fairest poll ever conducted in Nigeria.
