Community, Corps organise novelty match to promote peaceful coexistence in Kano

The Community Initiative to Promote Peace (CIPP) in conjunction with Mercy Corps on Sunday, organised a novelty football match to promote peaceful coexistence among the youths in Nasarawa Local Government Area in Kano.

The Acting Chief of Party for CIPP, Alhaji Sani Suleiman, said the essence of this programme is to bring young people together through sports to promote peaceful coexistence.

The novelty match held in Kano has the theme: “Promoting peace and unity through sports.”

He described sports as a connection that brings people together irrespective of their differences.

According to him, youths from Gwagwarwa, Tudun Wada under Nasarawa Local Government Area come together to identify other issues that affect their communities, such as drug abuse, education, unemployment, among others.

“They can form network and be an advocate for government and private sectors, in order to address issues properly.

“We are working with Kano State House of Assembly on policy to enact law that pertains to issues of drug abuse and social vices,”he said.

Suleiman said the groups are working with women associations, who meditate, empower and resolve issues in their communities to ensure peaceful coexistence is sustained.

The Acting Chief of Party, urged youths to fight against crime, drug abuse, social vices to contribute to the development of their communities.

He urged government to see youths as great assets in the state and nation, hence invest in their education and support them to have a bright future.

NAN reports that Mercy Corps has established conflict mitigate in six states, including Benue, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi and Plateau.

“The project focus on building capacity of community stakeholders, including youths, women, traditional leaders through dialogue and societal cohesion for peace and development.

Similarly, an official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano state Command, Haruna Kasim, urged youths to desist from getting involved in drug abuse.

He cautioned that the use of drugs without doctors prescription is an abuse.

On his part, Usman Aliyu, Dagachin Gwagwarwa, thanked Mercy Corps for organising the programme, saying it will go a long way in moving every community forward.
