Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to rid the state of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking, declaring an intensified fight against individuals and networks involved in the menace.

The Governor made this declaration on Thursday, while commissioning the newly established Quick Response Squad Office of the Kano State Special Taskforce on Illicit Drugs Abuse and Trafficking.

Governor Yusuf expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded by the taskforce since its inauguration, particularly in identifying and apprehending drug abusers, as well as facilitating their rehabilitation and access to appropriate medical treatment.

He disclosed that more than 60 per cent of identified drug abusers had been apprehended and were receiving necessary care and rehabilitation through the intervention of the taskforce.

Describing the development as a major achievement, the Governor said he was among the happiest citizens of Kano State over the progress made in confronting the drug abuse challenge.

He noted that the establishment of the Quick Response Squad Office, alongside the provision of necessary facilities and personnel, reflected his administration’s resolve to strengthen the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Governor Yusuf commended the Chairman of the Taskforce, Barrister Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, the Commissioner of Police Adamu Bakori, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders for their dedication and collaboration, assuring them of his administration’s continued support to ensure the success of the initiative.

He warned those involved in drug abuse, distribution and illicit trafficking that the government would not relent until the state was rid of the dangerous activities, stressing that all necessary measures would be taken to protect the lives and future of residents.

The Governor particularly appealed to young people to shun drug abuse and other harmful substances, urging them to embrace positive values and productive activities.

He emphasised that the fight against drug abuse required collective responsibility, calling on parents, community leaders, religious institutions and other stakeholders to support government efforts by raising awareness and discouraging the use and distribution of illicit drugs.
