The Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Sunday held a special tea break session at the NUJ Press Centre, featuring Associate Professor Sule Yau Sule as guest of honour.

The event brought together journalists, media managers, and stakeholders in the information sector to exchange ideas and strengthen professional ties.

In his welcome address, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Murtala Adewale, said the tea break initiative was conceived to promote bonding among members and create a platform for engagement with key stakeholders.

“This initiative is more than just a gathering; it is a platform to deepen our professional network and also to reflect on our shared responsibilities as journalists,” Adewale said. “We are delighted to have Professor Sule Yau Sule with us today to share his experiences and perspectives.”

Prof. Sule, a veteran journalist and PR scholar, commended the Correspondents’ Chapel for the initiative, describing it as a model for continuous professional growth and collaboration.

Sule who sponsored the special session called for strong bond and unity of members of the chapel to rekindle the past glory of the union.

“Journalism remains the backbone of democracy, and correspondents have a unique responsibility to ensure accurate and balanced reporting,” he said. “Platforms like this are necessary to remind us of the ethical obligations we owe society, especially in an era of misinformation.”

Also in attendance was former Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Baba Halilu Dantiye, who underscored the importance of mentorship and professionalism in journalism.

“The younger generation of journalists should embrace mentorship and strive to uphold the ethical standards of the profession,” Vice said. “This is how journalism can continue to serve as a watchdog of society.”

The Chairman of NUJ Kano Council, Comrade Sulaiman Dederi, represented by his Vice, Mustapha Gambo, praised the Correspondents’ Chapel for sustaining the tea break tradition.

“This initiative fosters unity, dialogue, and a sense of belonging among members,” he said. “It is commendable that the Chapel has kept this alive.”

The Public Relations Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (Kano/Jigawa Command) and the Kano Police Command also addressed the gathering, noting the importance of effective collaboration with the media.

“The media is a vital partner in creating awareness and building public confidence in security operations,” one of the PROs remarked.

Former chairmen of the Chapel, including Ibrahim Garba—now Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State Deputy Governor—and Lamara Garba Azare, Director of Public Affairs at Bayero University Kano, also delivered goodwill messages. They were joined by Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, former chairman of the Kano NUJ State Council, who described the initiative as “a legacy that strengthens the bond of the union.”

Other dignitaries in attendance included Abdullateef Abubakar Jos, publisher of Solacebase, and Barrister Funsho.

The tea break session is part of a series of initiatives by the Correspondents’ Chapel aimed at strengthening professional bonds among journalists and fostering dialogue with stakeholders across various sectors.
