The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate the Islamic New Year, 1st Muharram 1448AH.
People’s Pen24 reports that the declaration was contained in a circular issued by the Office of the Head of Civil Service, Kano State, dated June 15, 2026.
According to the circular, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the holiday in recognition of the significance of the Islamic calendar and Kano State’s longstanding tradition of observing the commencement of the Islamic New Year.
“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf has granted approval for tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026 (1st Muharram, 1448AH), which marks the commencement of the Islamic New Year, to serve as a public holiday for all workers in the state,” the statement read.
The government also urged civil servants and residents to use the occasion for sober reflection and offer prayers for continued peace, stability, progress and prosperity of Kano State and Nigeria as a whole.
The circular was signed by Safiyya Ali Suleiman, Director of Administration and General Services, on behalf of the Head of Civil Service.
The declaration means that government offices and public institutions across the state will remain closed on Tuesday to enable workers and residents observe the beginning of the new Islamic year.
