The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Sunday hosted a high-profile delegation of political figures at his Kano residence, intensifying speculation about emerging alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among those received by the former Kano State governor were former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi and Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde.
The meeting comes amid growing rumours that Kwankwaso may be considering a defection from the NNPP to align with a broader opposition coalition reportedly forming around the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as political actors begin early positioning for the next electoral cycle.
Governor Makinde’s presence is also seen as politically significant, given his ongoing rift with factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where internal disagreements have continued to shape alignments ahead of future contests.
Also present at the meeting was former Bayelsa governor , Senator Henry Dickson, who recently unveiled a new political platform, the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), further fueling discussions about a possible realignment of opposition forces.
Although details of the closed-door meeting were not disclosed as of press time, Kwankwaso, in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, described the gathering as part of Sallah festivities.
“Delighted to host Their Excellencies, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson at my Kano residence for this joyful Sallah celebration.
“Wishing everyone peace, blessings, and prosperity,” he wrote.
