Police operatives have prevented the abduction of three siblings in the Mararaba area of Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, following swift intervention that led to the arrest of a female suspect.
The spokesperson for the command, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday in Lafia.
According to him, 22-year-old Aisha Hashiru was apprehended by vigilant members of the public at the Orange Market in Mararaba while attempting to abduct the minors.
“She was about to be lynched when the Divisional Police Officer of Mararaba ‘A’ Division, acting promptly on the report, mobilised his patrol team to the scene, rescued both the suspect and the children, and moved them to the station for safety,” Nansel explained.
Preliminary investigations, he said, revealed that the suspect had sneaked into the home of Ramatu Auwal around 5:00 pm that day and took away her three children: four-year-old Fatima Auwal, five-year-old Shafiyi Auwal, and six-year-old Amina Auwal.
“Nemesis, however, caught up with her when she was intercepted by vigilant members of the public. Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to luring the children under the pretext of buying them biscuits,” the police spokesperson added.
Nansel further noted that the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, has directed that the case be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for detailed investigation.
He said, “He charged officers of the command to intensify efforts in unravelling other reported cases of missing children, and to strengthen the command’s fight against human trafficking across the state. The command appreciates the vigilance of residents and assures the public of its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and ensuring the safety of children across Nasarawa State.”
